Zhenjiang, a 3,500 year-old historical and cultural
city in China, is a newly- emerging port city featuring an integration
of industry, trade and tourism.
Situated on the intersection of the Yangtze River (the third
longest river
in the world) and Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (the longest
man-made waterway in China), Zhenjiang lies in Yangtze Delta
area, which has the strongest economy and the greatest potential
in China. As a municipality under the jurisdiction of the provincial
government, Zhenjiang has three cities (Danyang, Yangzhong and
Jurong) and three districts (Dantu District, Jingkou District
and Runzhou District) under its jurisdiction. Zhenjiang covers
an area of 3,848 square kilometers and has a population of 2.89
million. Zhenjiang, influenced by southern monsoon, is located
in north sub-tropical zone with four distinctive seasons.
Zhenjiang enjoys well-coordinated temperature, sunshine and
rainfall: its annual average air temperature is 15.4¡æ; Annual
sunshine time 2,057.2 hours; annual precipitation 1,072.8
mm., and 238 days of the year are frost-free.
Zhenjiang has four pillar industries, viz, chemicals, papermaking,
building materials and aluminum. The number of foreign-funded
enterprises (Sino-foreign Equity Joint Venture, Sino-foreign
Contractual Joint Venture, and Wholly Foreign-Funded Enterprise)
totals over 2,000. The contractual foreign investment has
reached 54.09 billion USD and the utilized investment totals
27.77 USD, among which more than 70 projects each earn over
10 million USD. Many notable world famous enterprises have
invested and established companies in Zhenjiang, such as Total
Co. of France, ITT and Cargill of the USA, Klockner-Moeller
and SIEMENS of Germany, IWAI and MITSUBISHI of Japan, Tsksid
of Italy, and National Power Group of Belgium.
Zhenjiang has an abundance of historic heritage sites due
to its well-established culture and arts. In 1986, the State
Council listed Zhenjiang as one of the State¡¯s Historical
and Cultural Cities. Over the past few years, Zhenjiang has
made great achievements in sanitation, cultural, and educational
undertakings.
Zhen jiang
is seated at the converging point of two Golden Waterways
in China (the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand
Canal), boasting enchanting landscape of mountains and waters,
which endows Zhenjiang with the fame of ¡° City of Mountains
and Forests¡±. The city owns numerous historic heritage sites,
among which 1,500-year-old Jinshan Temple, 1,400-year-old
Dinghui Temple in Mt. Jiao, 1,500-year-old Longchang Temple
in Mt. Baohua, and 2,000-year-old Taoist Temple in Mt. Mao.
These are all important and significant Buddhist or Taoist
temples. The fine works of many master calligraphers and famous
scholars living in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties are
preserved in the Stele Museum in Mt. Jiao. These works are
greatly admired by the fellow calligraphers and calligraphy-lovers
in China and abroad. The stone sculptures in front of the
Southern Dynasties Period¡¯s mausoleums date back to 1,700
years ago. The rare stone sculptures found here are exquisitely
carved and well preserved. Zhenjiang¡¯s Art Museum consists
of a group of British-style buildings that were used by British
Consulate-General. The Museum has a collection of 30,000 cultural
treasures. The emperors of Song, Qi, Liang (dynasties during
the Southern Dynasties Period), the well-known Prime Minister
Li Deyu of the Tang Dynasty, and the celebrities Su Shi, Mi
Fu, Xin Qiji of the Song Dynasty all had strong relations
with Zhenjiang. Many popular historic stories and folklore
were set in Zhenjiang: Sun Quan and Liu Bei forming an alliance
to resist Cao Chao; Madame White Snake flooding Mount Jin;
Yue Fei and Han Shizhong resisting Jin Dynasty.
Many other famous people in history also had connections to
Zhenjiang. Italian explorer Marco Polo, Japanese painter Sessyu,
and American writer Pearl S. Buck respectively lived and worked
in Zhenjiang for many years of their lives, and they all had
a deep affection for the city. The city and its characteristics
can all be found in these individuals¡¯ respective art and
work.
In the city of Zhenjiang, there are five public libraries
possessing 1,202,000 volumes, six galleries, one museum, 87
theaters and cinemas, as well as a number of recreational
sites including Workers¡¯ Cultural Palace, Youth Palace and
Children¡¯s Palace. The city has seven radio stations, five
TV stations, and two cable TV stations. The TV stations broadcast
throughout all of Zhenjiang, and 85% of the area in Zhenjiang
is linked to the Internet.
A basic health and wellness network has been established in
Zhenjiang and it is based on its towns and townships. Over
80% of the citizens are covered by health insurance, either
by the rural area cooperative medical care or other types
of medical insurance. The city has 827 medical institutions,
including 27 hospitals.
Z henjiang
has instituted The Nine-Year Compulsory Education System.
There are 134 high schools, 24 vocational middle schools (including
technical schools) and three higher learning institutions
(one of which is a National Key University). Zhenjiang employs
11,100 professional and technical employees, all of whom have
varied qualifications and specialties. The city has 160 various
types of scientific research institutes. One of the national
level research institutions is The Institute for Silkworm
& Sericulture under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural
Science.
Currently, Zhenjiang has successively signed the International
Sister Cities Agreements with Tsusi and Kurasikisi in Japan,
Tempe in the USA, Lac-Megantic in Canada, Izmit in Turkey,
Londrina in Brazil, and Iksan in Republic of Korea. Meanwhile,
Zhenjiang maintains friendly and cooperative ties with Mannheim
in Germany, Coquimbo in Chile, Namur in Belgium, and Betrosan
in Romania.
